I have heard that in Canada saying "Yes Maim/ No Sir" isn't polite.... is this true?

it is most definately a generational thing. If you are meeting your grandmothers social group it would be perfectly fine. However, if you were out in the city and used these terms with people slightly older than you, they would probably would be amused and asked you where you were from
