What do you think is on his mind? (Guys)?

I went to prom with a guy that I am pretty friendly with. We went and danced every dance. He held my hand, kept his arm around me, even kissed me in the end. He ended up asking me how i felt. I told him i liked him.. (I know, i've been told it was a mistake). He said he was "confused" after getting out of his last relationship. We have only gone out together once and he could barely speak to me. We text often, and sometimes he even texts first. He's super friendly to me and will talk to me for hours. However, he remains vehement in insisting that he is "confused". He does not seem to want to see me, but obviously does not want to shake me off completely. I respect that for now I need to be his friend, but in your opinion, do I have a shot, or is this to be considered a polite rejection? And either way, what is my next move?
